1. Why is UWG involved with voter registration?

The 1998 reauthorization of the federal Higher Education Act includes a requirement that higher education institutions make a "good faith effort" to make voter registration available to all enrolled students.

2. How do I register to vote?

Registering to vote is easy and now you can complete the whole process online! Registering to vote online is convenient. While you still see paper forms available, Georgia's online registration system is always available and at your fingertips at https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov.

3. Why Register to Vote Online?

Voters make common mistakes on paper registrations. Even if the information is entirely accurate, paper forms need to be entered manually into the voter registration database, which leads to transcription errors, especially when the voter's handwriting is illegible.
With an online process, a voter receives immediate feedback. If there is an error, the voter can correct the registration record in real time. Simply put, online voter registration avoids potential problems and speeds up delivery to the correct elections office.

4. Is there an app to register online?

GA VOTES.. There is an App for that! Visit the App Store on your smart phone and download the GA Votes App to register to vote using OLVR - Online Voter Registration!

5. Where on campus may I register to vote?

UWG is strongly encouraging students to register online. Manual applications are available in the Political Science Department located in Pafford Building and in Ingram Library.

6. As a UWG student living away from home, where should I register?

As a university student you may register to vote either at your Carroll County residence address or at your hometown residence address. If you register using your hometown address, you must vote in your hometown on Election Day or vote by absentee ballot. An absentee ballot must be requested from your home county at least 30 days prior to the election. If you wish to vote in Carroll County you must register to vote using your Carroll County address!

7. I live on campus in a UWG residence hall. What is the correct way to complete the voter registration form?

All students who live on campus are assigned a five digit P.O. Box number. If you live on campus you should complete your voter registration form in the following format:

Residence address: 1601 Maple Street, Carrollton, GA 30118
Mailing address: P.O. Box # assigned to you by UWG Mail Services, Carrollton, GA 30118.

If you do not include your mailing address you will not receive your precinct card mailed to you from the Georgia Secretary of State nor will you be able to receive important correspondence from the elections office. University Mail Service will not deliver mail on campus without a Post Office box number.

8. I am a UWG student living off campus, may I register to vote using the university address?

No. Georgia law specifies applicants shall use their residence address when registering to vote. If you do not live on campus you should not use the university address, you should use your off campus residence address.

9. Now that I have registered to vote online, what's next?

Once you have registered to vote online your registration record will be processed by the appropriate elections and registration office. You can login to MY VOTER PAGE (MVP) www.mvp.sos.ga.gov, where you can confirm the accuracy of your personal registration, find your polling place, obtain an absentee application, or print an immediate copy of your voting precinct card. All voter registration records are verified overnight by the Georgia Secretary of State. Please allow 5 to 7 days to check your status online.

10. Where do I vote on Election Day?

Your Election Day voting precinct is determined by the residence address you listed on your voter registration application. You may find your polling location at MY VOTER PAGE www.mvp.sos.ga.gov.
Remember UWG students who live off campus may not necessarily vote on campus. Voters are encourage to check their registration status and poll location BEFORE Election Day!

11. How do I Absentee By Mail?

To vote an Absentee by Mail ballot you must first submit an Absentee by Mail application to your hometown elections office. For a list of county elections offices visit:

Do not send your absentee request to the Carroll County office unless you are registered to vote in Carroll County.

12. What is a Provisional Ballot?

A Provisional Ballot is used on Election Day to record a vote if a voter's eligibility is in question or if the poll worker is unable to locate the voter's name on the elector's list in the precinct.

13. If I am registered to vote in another county, can I vote in Carroll County? I can cast a Provisional Ballot right?

No, under Georgia law, you must be registered to vote in the county where you are attempting to vote. If you did not register to vote in Carroll County by the voter registration deadline, you are not eligible to cast a Provisional Ballot. If you believe you did register to vote in Carroll County by the voter registration deadline, you will be permitted to cast a Provisional Ballot. However, your Provisional Ballot will not count unless you are properly registered to vote in Carroll County by the voter registration deadline.

14. Can I take a photo of my ballot and post a "ballot selfie" on social media?"

No. Georgia Election law 21-2-413 provides that no photography be allowed of a ballot or the face of a voting machine or DRE unit while an elector is voting such ballot or machine or DRE unit.

15. How do UWG student organizations or individuals receive training to conduct a Voter Registration Drive?

The Carroll County Elections & Registration office in partnership with UWG Political Science and UWG Student Government Association will offer Voter Registration Drive training in preparation for an election. Student organizations planning on conducting Voter Registration Drives on campus or out in the community are required to contact Ms. Brenda McCrary, Political Science Department Assistant, at amccrary@westga.edu or 678-839-6504. Ms. McCrary will notify the organization of time and location of Voter Registration Drive training.
