From the local Emergency Management Agency:
The City of Whitesburg Police Department, Carroll County Public Safety, and Whitesburg Elementary School will be conducting a disaster exercise drill on September 9th from 9-11am at the school. Parents have been notified. Exercise drills are important tools to help reinforce disaster preparedness, and give faculty and students the skills they need to respond in a real-world scenario. This is only an exercise drill, and no students will be in harm’s way as a result.

From the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Agency:
Carroll County Schools and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office hosted its 2nd Annual School Safety Summit on July, 31, 2014 at the Ag-Ed Center in Carrollton. Over 200 participants and visitors attended the event, with participation from all county schools, public safety and health agencies, including Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Fire Rescue, City of Carrollton Police, City of Carrollton Fire, Villa Rica Police, Temple Police, Mt. Zion Police, Bowdon Police, Whitesburg Police, E-911, West Georgia Ambulance, District 4 Public Health, Tanner and the Coroner’s Office.
The Tabletop Exercise was for an explosion scenario. County and School Board Attorney Cynthia Daley and Assistant Superintendent David Goldberg led the participants through the hypothetical situation to test how each school’s safety plan addressed the scenario and further evaluate it for needed improvements. The more that our school faculty emphasize safety, the better prepared they will be if a real-life event happens at their school.
Carroll County is very fortunate to have so many leaders who will do whatever it takes to keep our school children safe. We are especially appreciative to Sheriff Terry Langley for his sponsorship of the event and to the School Safety Team Members for their continued service.

Georgia Weapons Carry License
Effective July 1, 2014 there will be changes to the Georgia Weapons Carry License issued by the Carroll County Probate Court. The Georgia Legislature made changes to the issuance of the Georgia Weapons Carry License process in the 2014 Session; there was conflict in the language of the code section as to the process for a renewal license as it pertains to having a fingerprint background check verses a name check background. The Georgia Council of Probate Court Judges has reviewed the code revision with assistance from the Georgia Attorney General, Georgia Crime Information Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has adopted the following guidelines until such time that the legislation can be revised to remove the conflicting language.
You may renew your Georgia Weapons License 90 days prior to your expiration date, and there will be a 30 day grace period after the expiration date. The cost will be $35.00 for a five year renewal license. If your license is expired more than 30 days, you will be considered a first time applicant. There will be a name criminal background check conducted by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department on each renewal license. You may apply in the Carroll County Probate Court Office during the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM. Applications will not be accepted after 4:30 PM.
If you would like to review the legislation, it is listed on the Georgia Government Website as HB 60, House Bill 60 is a revision to the Official Code of Georgia 16-11-29.

Due to recent storms in our area the Better Business Bureau has issued an alert of contractor scams. Use these tips to ensure YOU are not a victim.
1) Get at least 3 – 4 quotes from contractors
2) Insist that payments be made to the company not an individual
3) Do not pay for the job in advance
4) Ensure the contractor has proper license
5) Ask to see a certificate of insurance
6) Get a written contract of work to be done, pricing, and time-frame
7) Pay by credit card if possible, as you may have additional protection if there’s a problem
